A Review of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome) Water Treatment
نویسنده
چکیده
Palm oil is one of the two most important vegetable oils in the world’s oil and fats market. The extraction and purification processes generate different kinds of waste generally known as palm oil mill effluent (POME). The environmental impact of POME cannot be over emphasized; hence the need for treatment measures to reduce these impacts before discharge. Therefore, this paper reviews the processing, purification of palm oil and the different methods of treatment applied to the POME that is being generated. Various methods such as tank digestion and facultative ponds; tank digestion and mechanical aeration; decanter and facultative ponds; anaerobic digestion and facultative ponds and so on, were reviewed, each with its merits and demerits in application. The adsorption treatment of POME using boiler fly ash is also being applied. Therefore, the treatment of POME is inevitable if a friendly and healthy environment devoid of pollution is to be met and also to meet-up with increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Prospective treatment methods for POME were also reviewed. Moreover, the effective treatment of POME yields useful products such as methane, biodegradable plastic, fertilizers and animal feeds.

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is an important source of inland water pollution when released into local rivers or lakes without treatment. In the process of palm oil milling, POME is generat‐ ed through sterilization of fresh oil palm fruit bunches, clarification of palm oil and effluent from hydro-cyclone operations [Borja et al.,1996a]. POME is a viscous brown liquid with fine suspended solid...

Producing crude palm oil (CPO) will have side effect on producing palm oil mill effluent (POME). Besides of high COD /BOD contents, POME still contains high amount of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphor and mineral). Traditional treatment of palm oil mill effluent using facultative anaerobic method not fully eliminated COD and BOD into allowable limit. The objective of this research was to utilize p...

Palm oil processing operation is invariably accompanied by palm oil mill effluent (POME) considered to be an environmental pollutant. While anaerobic digestion and the present tertiary treatment technologies of POME are able to meet the current regulatory effluent discharge requirement of biological oxygen demand (BOD) 100 mg litre – the current limit set by the Department of Environment (DOE) ...

The rising global demand for palm oil and its associated products has led to increased numbers of palm oil refineries with its attendant effluent discharge. Many researches have confirmed the ecological disruptive potentiality of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), still further attention has to be directed at POME’s potential genotoxicity. The present study has made physico-chemical and genotoxicit...
